
What is a GIA Diamond?
GIA is an independent, non-profit organization that sets the standards for determining diamond quality. It also conducts gem researches and educates gems professionals. You would have probably heard about the 4Cs when buying a diamond. What GIA does is that they grade the diamond according and values each factor of the diamond greatly.
GIA does not buy or sell diamonds neither does it trade or mine diamonds. Their diamond quality assessment is objective and unbiased, hence, when looking for a diamond, you should be looking a naturally mined diamond along with a GIA grading report specifically for that diamond.
What do we mean why when say that this diamond is GIA certified?
To clear the misconception, GIA does not certify diamonds, but, grades the diamonds. Hence, we call it GIA grading report. They examine the diamond and grades the diamond according to their assessment on the 4Cs. Then, GIA issues a report to state the results of the diamond which is the grading result.
The GIA is an important grading report especially when buying a diamond. Other than the physical copy of the grading report, there is also a digital format where you can enter the GIA no. into the website and you will see the exact same specifications as the physical copy. Are all diamonds GIA graded?
NO! Not all diamonds are graded by GIA. You might have seen in the market where mostly gems are graded by GIA. This is because, GIA is highly trusted by jewellers like our own online jewellery store and buyers and it is a place for accurate grading services.
To be more cautious of the diamond that you buy, ask to see the GIA no. of the diamond. The no. should be the same on the physical report and inscribed on the girdle of the diamond. E.g. Is it necessary for my diamond to be GIA certified?
Usually a GIA diamond is bought for engagement rings and it must be of good value. It may also be one of your most expensive buy. The GIA grading report gives you all the necessary information you need to know before buying a diamond. With this report you can be assured that what you are buying is a naturally mined diamond. Anyone would buy a stone of a better quality and there are many differences in each stone. Hence, with a report you can compare a variety of stones with different jewellers and compare the prices of similar specifications stone. Then, pick out the best that suits your budget.
Are GIA diamonds more costly than other
GIA graded diamond is an assurance that you are buying diamonds of good quality. It is up to jewellers to tag a price depending on its specifications. Think of buying a diamond like buying a car.
