Titanium

A wedding ring, like marriage, is meant to last through the ages, hence a good many couples opt for titanium rings for its resilience and low maintenance.

Titanium is widely known for its resilience and durability; it is three times stronger and lighter than steel.  That being said, titanium jewelry can’t be adjusted as easily, hence one must be certain of its measurements before making a decision. Titanium is unable to mixed with other metal elements, and thus remain in its purest form.  This characteristic however is immensely advantageous, as titanium is highly resistance towards dents, scratches as well as corrosion. This precious metal naturally comes in grey and black and is often finished with high polish, satin or frost finishing.

Titanium jewellery are popular due its its light weight and overall comfortability. Hence it makes for an ideal material for wedding bands or engagement ring for couples, especially when they are not accustomed to wearing jewellery. Titanium is considered reasonably affordable, comparable to tungsten. That being said, its price range for rings fall between stainless steel rings and more expensive metals like gold or platinum. Ultimately, It is definitely worth the investment as it requires little maintenance to

maintain its look!

Stainless Steel

Costly wedding ring that are often made of diamonds and gold are impractical for daily wear, hence it is good to consider a more realistic alternative like stainless steel.

Stainless steel rings are strong and durable, but more importantly, it is less likely to rust and corrode as compared to other metals. Stainless steel is made from chromium, nickle and titanium, these materials are inexpensive and durable. Hence, stainless steel rings are highly sought after all over the world as gifts. Many couples opt for stainless steel wedding bands for daily wear and store their original diamond laced platinum and gold rings in a safe place.

The chromium element in stainless steel rings resists oxidation and prevents rusting of the material. It consists of generally 10.5% of the material buildup in stainless steel.

Platinum

Platinum is rightfully one of the most popular metals for jewellery. Renowned for its elegance and class, this precious metal complements all sorts of gemstones perfectly.

Platinum is one of the most precious metals due to its purity and durability. It has a beautiful colour, often compared to white gold. Platinum’s natural colour can be described as white or sliver. Its colour and elegance are the very reasons why it is an ideal material for wedding bands and engagement rings.

Platinum is thirty times as rare as gold and is only made purer when used for jewellery; platinum must be near 95% of its own material to be considered pure platinum. Fortunately, there are many affordable options for platinum, such as the 585 Platinum, which consists of 58.5% platinum and 41.5% cobalt and copper.

Platinum is known for its durability, as well as its unique resistance against heat expansion. Platinum is also heavier than most metals, hence is ideal as a ring setting to properly secure the diamond .

Black Gold

Gold black jewellery are often statement pieces, offering a unique spin on contemporary jewellery. So if shiny gold bore you, then “gold black”!

Gold in its purest form, takes on a striking yellow colour, black gold however, that has a tinge of black, can only be achieved went gold is mixed with other metals such as cobalt. Interestingly, in order to attain the black ring effect, the other metals are plated onto the surface of gold, as oppose to more common practices of simply combining the metals.

To date, electroplating is the most common method of creating black gold. The process essentially plates gold with black rhodium or ruthenium, which as a result, achieves a black finishing. A notably flaw in this design, however, is that the surface coating of black gold rings or any jewellery that underwent electroplating would gradually wear off, thus occasionally require maintenance. Hence, if one were to wear a black gold ring daily, one has to be careful not to rub or scratch the ring, so as to prevent peeling of the surface coating. Unfortunately, it is rather impossible for the ring to remain in optimal conditions, hence the ring wearer has to send it for servicing to maintain its look.

It is, hence, highly suggested for black gold jewellery to always be kept and stored in a cloth dust bag along with a box to prevent it from rubbing against other pieces of jewellery that would result in scratches.

Tungsten

Forget conventional gold and silver rings, Tungsten and diamond is the true match made in heaven.

Fun fact: Tungsten is ten times harder than gold.

Tungsten carbide is so strong that it can resist corrision. It is four times harder than titanium, ten times harder than 18K gold and five times harder than steel. Tungsten Carbide measure between 8 and 9 on the MOHS hardness scale as compared to diamonds which measure 10 on the scale.  Rings made from Tungsten Carbide is are known to be durable and to hold its shape due to its extreme toughness. The material is so strong that it can be bent or resized. These rings hence, require little maintenance.

Tungsten are not made out purely of tungsten as the metal in its purest form is difficult to work with. Hence, that contains tungsten most often compromise of additional elements, thus the name tungsten carbide.

It has additional elements, hence the name tungsten carbide.

Pure tungsten is used in industrial applications, and when used for jewellery, it is compounded into carbide form.

An equal number of tungsten and carbon atoms are combined to create tungsten carbide. Despite the mix in elements, tungsten still has the same characteristics such as a high melting point.

Do you really need wedding bands?

Do you really need wedding bands, or are engagement rings enough to serve as a wedding ring as well after getting married?

Even though the correct and wrong way for a marriage process is not clearly defined, most couples usually opt to wear their wedding rings. To some, wedding rings or bands are a necessity for marriage, essentially symbolizing both the devotion and love between two individuals, as well as represent the transition from a fiancé/ fiancée to a husband/wife! One the joys of being wedded, is the life upon marriage that is spent with your significant other, in a literal and figurative sense, set in stone by a wedding ring.

That being said, you should choose a wedding ring you’re comfortable with, considering how you would have to wear it all the time. Some people choose not to wear their rings entirely, due to the hindrance of having an expensive diamond atop their finger. Other worries include the fear of the diamond or gemstone or other parts of the ring falling off.

It is not necessary for a wedding ring to complement an engagement ring and can be a stand-alone piece, however if you are proud of your marriage and wish to flaunt it for the world to see, by all means wear both your engagement and wedding rings together!

The question is – are wedding bands necessary during the wedding?

It goes without saying that it is ultimately up to preference; some feel that the significant other who was proposed to get to have both engagement and wedding rings while the other, only the latter. Hence some couples opt for the ring exchange to include only the engagement ring and wedding ring. However, there are more religiously-staunch couples that are required to abide by their religious ceremonies, which may at times necessitate separate rings for wedding and engagement in order to properly seal the marriage
