A more popular option in Asia countries would be 18K gold. However, consumers can also go for 14K gold. 14K gold would be a cheaper option as there is lesser amount of pure gold content in the ring.

Platinum is also a more common option as it is stronger and more durable compared to gold. Platinum is dense, therefore, more material is needed – would cost more compared to gold.

Tips And Tricks For Customizing An Engagement Ring

There are various tips and tricks to know of when customizing an engagement ring, little tweaks to a ring will not only personalize the ring but help make it more affordable.

Engagement ring designs are everywhere in the market. A customized ring doesn’t mean that you literally must come up with the design yourself from scratch. You can find trending designs as inspiration and tweak a little bit to call it your own. Being able to look through some designs at retail stores gives you a rough idea on what kind of designs do you like and dislike.

Customizing a ring can be: A specific ring feature from Shop A + A specific ring design from Shop B.

For example, if you like the design of the side stones from shop A and the design of the ring casing from shop B. To have the best of both worlds, combine the designs and make it your own.

A customized ring takes a much longer time compared to selecting the designs off the shelves. Starting from square 1, sketching the skeleton of the ring and then to actually make the ring itself needs a tedious duration of 3-6 months depending on how complicated the design is. Engage a jeweller to share your designs and let them advise you on the best way to create your ring. Give yourself time and have patience during the process as you might not want to screw up the ring of a lifetime.

Setting yourself a budget before starting to shop for the engagement ring. There are several factors that you may need to consider as they are the ones that affects the price of the ring. A rough estimate of the price will only be calculated once you have chosen all the necessary elements in your ring. With your budget, you can eliminate unnecessary elements, and this prevents you from overspending.  For example, opting for a G colour diamond instead of a F colour diamond of the same carat weight could save you more than $50. A slight colour difference is would not be obvious to the naked eye.

Always bear in mind that the ring is made for her. She has the final say on what needs to be included, but that is up to you to find out yourself because ultimately it is a special surprise.

Consider these few factors:

– Extravagant or Minimalist

– Coloured Stones or Diamonds

– White, Rose or Yellow Gold or Dual Tone Rings

– Active or Sedentary Lifestyle

Having consider these factors shows her that you have spared a thought for her

needs and personality. You’ll definitely be graded an A* fiancé!

Trilogy Rings – One centre stone with 2 smaller stones on the side which can either be smaller carat diamonds or smaller gemstones to have a unique contrast in colours.

Side Stone Rings – One centre stone in the middle with multiple small diamonds to enhance the beauty of the entire ring with its dazzling diamonds.

A Brief Introduction to GIA Diamonds

Want to learn more about GIA Diamonds?

At Rio, we seek to provide our customers essential information about diamonds so as to help them make informed decisions.

What is a GIA Diamond?

GIA is an independent, non-profit organization that sets the standards for determining diamond quality. It also conducts gem researches and educates gems professionals. You would have probably heard about the 4Cs when buying a diamond. What GIA does is that they grade the diamond according and values each factor of the diamond greatly.

GIA does not buy or sell diamonds neither does it trade or mine diamonds. Their diamond quality assessment is objective and unbiased, hence, when looking for a diamond, you should be looking a naturally mined diamond along with a GIA grading report specifically for that diamond.

What do we mean why when say that this diamond is GIA certified?

To clear the misconception, GIA does not certify diamonds, but, grades the diamonds. Hence, we call it GIA grading report. They examine the diamond and grades the diamond according to their assessment on the 4Cs. Then, GIA issues a report to state the results of the diamond which is the grading result.

The GIA is an important grading report especially when buying a diamond. Other than the physical copy of the grading report, there is also a digital format where you can enter the GIA no. into the website and you will see the exact same specifications as the physical copy. Click here to check out your GIA diamond report.

Are all diamonds GIA graded?

NO! Not all diamonds are graded by GIA. You might have seen in the market where mostly gems are graded by GIA. This is because, GIA is highly trusted by jewellers like our own online jewellery store and buyers and it is a place for accurate grading services.

To be more cautious of the diamond that you buy, ask to see the GIA no. of the diamond. The no. should be the same on the physical report and inscribed on the girdle of the diamond. E.g. GIA 2196247026. You can use this no. and check on their website and download a PDF version of the report if you need it! (click on the link above to check it out!)

Is it necessary for my diamond to be GIA certified?

Usually a GIA diamond is bought for engagement rings and it must be of good value. It may also be one of your most expensive buy. The GIA grading report gives you all the necessary information you need to know before buying a diamond. With this report you can be assured that what you are buying is a naturally mined diamond. Anyone would buy a stone of a better quality and there are many differences in each stone. Hence, with a report you can compare a variety of stones with different jewellers and compare the prices of similar specifications stone. Then, pick out the best that suits your budget.

Are GIA diamonds more costly than other

The Difference between Natural Diamonds & Lab Grown Diamonds

The Difference between Natural diamonds and Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab Grown diamonds are real diamonds. These man-made diamonds have the exact same chemical properties as natural diamonds. Man-made diamonds are recreated under the same conditions as natural diamonds. Lab Grown diamonds are made by recreating the same conditions as for natural diamonds that caused the diamond to grow. E.g. Carbon, heat and pressure. It takes about 1 week to grow a 1 carat diamond and about 30 days for a 2-3 carat diamond.

Lab diamonds are generally cheaper than natural diamonds. It is about half the price of natural diamonds. Their prices are estimated based on their 4Cs. Lab diamonds are not always perfect. As it is recreated under the same conditions, they will have slight variations in colour which is similar to natural diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are also graded by certified laboratories. Rio Diamonds Lab Grown diamonds are certified by International Gemological Institute. Each diamond has its own laboratory grown number laser inscripted on the girdle of the diamond just like GIA diamonds. It is one of its kind. Comparing lab grown diamonds to diamond stimulants such as zirconia and moissanite. Cubic zirconia is not the same as lab grown diamonds. Its light performance of these two diamonds are different.

A jeweler can tell the difference of between zirconia and lab grown, however it will be difficult to tell the difference between natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds. Seeing the diamond from its naked eye, anyone will not be able to tell the difference unless they see the laser inscription on the diamond. If you’re opting for a much affordable option, you can go for a lab grown diamond. These diamonds do have a re-sale value as well. You can expect to resell the diamond at a similar buying price. It is important for you to know that both natural and lab grown diamonds prices will not increase due to inflation. It should not be something that you can invest in and expect it’s price to grow overtime. If you’re looking for affordable diamond jewellery, take a look at our collection!

Common Misconceptions When Purchasing Diamonds

Diamonds are enduring and everlasting

A diamond on a Moh’s scale of hardness is classified as 10, the highest score. Moh’s scale is a scale used to measure the hardness of a mineral by its resistance to scratching. A score of 10 means that a diamond cannot be scratched. It is true that diamonds do last long due to the hard composition. However, it is also possible to crack, chip or break a diamond from a direct hit with enough pressure, under extreme temperatures or when it is handled inappropriately. Therefore, diamonds needs to be cared for accordingly. As such, jewellery such as and should be taken off and stored safely when doing strenuous activity.

The bigger, the better, the dearer

It is not true that the bigger, the better, the dearer. A big diamond can make a big impression but that does not mean it is more valuable than other diamonds. The worth of the diamond is dependent on a variety of factors: While size does matter, so does the 4C’s: cut, clarity, carat and colour of the stone. A big diamond could end up being worth less than smaller diamonds if it has poor clarity and colour. It is completely possible to have a large diamond of mediocre colour and still cost less than a small diamond that has high quality colour. It is best to pick diamonds on their overall qualities rather than just their size.

Diamonds are formed from coal

Many people think that diamonds are formed from pressurized coal. This is because no one has been able to study the formation stage of the diamond. Billions of years ago, diamonds are formed deep in the earth from another form of carbon, graphite. Diamonds are so often found in coal mines and since coal is also made of carbon, two of them are confused as the same.  diamonds are rare

Diamonds are valuable and beautiful, but rare is not one of them. They are misunderstood as rare as they only make up a small portion of the organic materials found on the planet. Compared to other coloured gems, diamonds are more common. This does not detract from their potential value or beauty but how could diamonds be considered rare when millions of married couples have a diamond rings or jewellery to call their own?
